Case Study: Upgrading Computer Aided Dispatch for the California Department of Parks and Recreation

With 279 parks, California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is the largest park system in the United States.

The DPR wanted to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for its more than 80 million annual visitors across its wide-ranging, diverse terrain. But doing so posed a communications challenge.

DPR officials believed an updated Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system would help generate return visits while keeping the public and peace officers safe. But having two communication centers hundreds of miles apart meant a system upgrade would be a tough task.



Fortunately for the DPR, another California state agency recently had undergone an extensive upgrade to its CAD system. After a lengthy procurement and due diligence process, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had hired Conduent and its major CAD vendor, TriTech Software Systems, to integrate, deploy and support an advanced, off-the-shelf CAD solution. The CHP acted as a service provider for the Department of Parks and Recreation, which was able to use CHP’s CAD infrastructure and software applications while operating its own system architecture.



By piggybacking on the CHP system rather than having to purchase and implement an entirely new system of its own, the DPR accomplished in 9 months what could have taken 18 months or more.
