Data: A Federal Agency’s Best Friend

March 17, 2016 James Bessin

Data is the lifeblood of every organization in every industry, and the public sector is no exception. According to the research firm IDC, the digital universe is growing at an astounding rate and is expected to double every two years – opening the door to an abundance of challenges and opportunities for Federal agencies.

With the recent shift in focus from why to how government should embrace data analytics, we are proud to present our new Federal whitepaper, “Making Your Data Work for You.” The paper summarizes data analytics best practices and explores the technology behind data integration, information extraction, visualization and predictive analytic tools. Additionally, we provide concrete examples of the ways data analysis can help Federal agencies improve overall operations, including:

  • Document Management: Agencies can leverage data analytics by extracting knowledge from unstructured documents, identifying documents with linguistic features similar to those in known fraudulent documents, and automatically routing documents to appropriate recipients or steps in a business process.
  • Improving citizen service: With access to the most up-to-date information about prior interactions, customer care agents can quickly pull data about a citizen to effectively resolve his or her need. Predictive analytics tools can also help agencies better understand constituent behaviors or problems to preemptively resolve issues, improving citizen satisfaction and saving agencies time and money – a win-win for both.
  • Shaping workforce development: Through data analysis of workforce processes and procedures, agencies can easily identify bottlenecks that hinder employee productivity. Data analytics will also play a significant role in shaping the content used to train and develop the next generation of Federal workers.

Ultimately, a data-driven approach will help agencies cut costs, streamline operations and direct resources to initiatives that generate great constituent satisfaction.
