NASCIO Promotes State CIOs and the Role of IT in State Government

With the understanding that states run on IT, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) is committed to honoring the vital, but often unsung, role information technology plays in state government and to recognizing the individuals that lead technology policy and innovation.

Through campaigns and award programs, NASCIO is shining a spotlight on examples of IT best practices, innovation and transformation; showing #StateITRocks and #StateCIOsRock for leading the way.

#StateCIOsRock

NASCIO uses the moniker #StateCIOsRock for the State CIOs Make a Difference campaign. This annual campaign gives states a platform to tell their story of how strategic and policy-driven IT initiatives are making a difference in government operations and the lives of citizens. Stories shared through the campaign include:

  • Creative solutions to workforce shortfalls;
  • Focusing on customer service excellence and the customer experience;
  • Streamlining state processes to be more business-friendly; and
  • Using data analysis to strategically addresses social issues.

The 2016 campaign is currently underway featuring Florida, Montana, Ohio, Michigan, Delaware and Washington. Each state is highlighted for two weeks through a state-specific webpage featuring their story in written narrative and video format, and through social media posts. Follow #StateCIOsRock for updates and visit NASCIO.org/CIOsMakeaDifference.

#StateITRocks

For the past 28 years, the NASCIO State IT Recognition Awards have honored innovation and excellence in the use of information technology in state government. Submitted projects detail how IT is transforming government operations and business processes, and engaging citizens in a more customer-centric way.

NASCIO members serve as judges to distill over 100 submissions across multiple categories down to just 3 finalists per category. During an awards dinner at the NASCIO Annual Conference held each fall, the recipient in each category is publicly announced. The night not only provides deserved recognition for specific states and project teams but serves as a larger example of the integral and transformative role IT can play when CIOs are supported as strategic leaders. In essence, the awards spotlight the many ways in which #StateITRocks.

The awards live on long after the celebratory dinner, in videos created by the recipients and through the NASCIO Awards Library, which houses all nominations 2001 to present; facilitating the exchange of best practices, innovation and lessons learned.

#YouRock

State CIOs need strong partners and advocates.  NASCIO encourages our fellow associations and partners in the public and private sectors to follow and share the #StateCIOsRock campaign, to congratulate the past and upcoming award recipients, and to share the successes and innovations you encounter. After all, state IT supporters rock.
