Driving Toward Sustainable Cities: Enhancing accessibility and optimizing passenger flows
This is the third blog post in an ongoing series highlighting our commitment to the spirit of sustainable cities – those communities, companies, and leaders developing new processes and technologies to address environmental impacts, social equity, public safety, and transportation demands around the world.
Solutions to help agencies accommodate passengers’ abilities while optimizing flow, safety, and equity
Transportation systems help communities thrive. They support vibrant economies when workers can dependably commute between work and home, they help citizens enjoy experiences and opportunities outside of their immediate geography, and they ensure that people can travel freely and engage with their world regardless of their abilities. More than ever, transportation and transit agencies are designing systems and implementing hardware toward user experiences — something good for everyone.
Accessibility by design
More than one billion people in the world will experience disability at some point in their life, according to the World Health Organization. Accordingly, transportation and transit agencies are at the forefront of ensuring that their passengers have fair, safe and efficient access to services regardless of their physical, sensory and cognitive abilities.
Transportation officials must balance these accessible services while also ensuring fast and efficient systems. Outdated infrastructure and processes – especially ticket-reading machines and fare gates – impede experiences and efficiency, especially for those with certain impairments or needs. Passengers requiring canes, crutches and wheelchairs, for example, or those carrying bulky luggage or strollers, often have poor and frustrating public transit experiences. And to compound matters, lack of accommodation for some often restricts flow and safety for all.
Conduent’s 3D Fare Gate Solution ensures accessible operations for transportation agencies and is designed for many types of passengers. Its 3D imaging sensors provide accurate detection of passengers and objects to enhance accessibility and safety for disabled passengers with mobility aids, travelers with bulky luggage, small children and bicycles.
3D Fare Gate is built on our belief that effective solutions accommodate all passengers regardless of their physical, visual or hearing abilities.

Accelerate boarding, reduce fare evasion
Conduent’s 3D Fare Gate helps deliver secure, fast and controlled boarding while reducing opportunities for fare evaders, ensuring that all passengers experience equitable access while helping transportation agencies limit revenue losses. Paired with Conduent’s data monitoring system, transit authorities also have access to reporting, analytics and real-time enforcement opportunities by knowing precisely when and where fare evasion occurs.
The solution is currently deployed in France, where Conduent Transportation designed access control equipment to meet Transilien SNCF's needs, allowing quick and easy access for travelers, while detecting and deterring ticketing fraud.

Ticketing solutions to elevate experiences
Conduent’s Ticketing Vending Machines (TVMs) and validators are an extension of our commitment to providing modern touchpoints that streamline operations.
Conduent TVMs provide hearing-assistance technology, including audio jacks, magnetic hearing loops, microphones for remote assistance, and “vocal mode” to help support hearing-impaired passengers.

Furthermore, our TVMs are coded from the ground up with accessibility requirements at the forefront. Clearly structured content, consistent labelling and predictable link targets are coded to integrate with assistive technologies and meet accessibility standards.
These technologies present clear, visual messages and icons to convey messages to passengers. Gates and line signage provide information to help optimize passenger throughput, and LED-powered glass panels create a visual contrast to accommodate different visual abilities.
Increasingly, transportation and transit agencies are leading the drive to create safe, equitable and efficient journeys for passengers. Conduent remains committed to ensuring our services and solutions help support their missions.
