Growing, evolving, and sustaining a loved workplace culture

How teamwork, appreciation and respect can cultivate “Most Loved Workplace” recognition

For companies and leaders, the collective impact of a global pandemic, shift to a more remote workforce, and recurring economic and geopolitical uncertainty is difficult to deconstruct – especially in terms of the overall well-being of workplaces.

One certainty, however, is that traditional models of attracting, developing, and retaining talented people are becoming increasingly obsolete. Today, the best workplaces provide frameworks where people are free to be their whole selves while making a positive impact in the world.

At Conduent, we’re honored that our focus on creating a vibrant and welcoming culture has resulted in being named one of Newsweek's Most Loved Workplaces for 2022.

We believe that together we can make a difference in the lives of millions of people each day. That’s why associates are free to be themselves, afforded opportunities to grow and thrive, and have space to make big differences in the world and for our clients.

I continue to be amazed at what happens when organizations create fertile ground by promoting growth, acceptance, and having fun while striving toward exceptional standards. Such an environment allows our associates to innovate, to prosper, and bring the whole of their selves − and the whole of their talents − to their teammates and clients.

Organizations can design exceptional workplaces with the same methods and intent they use to design exceptional products and solutions. At Conduent, we strive to go beyond our commitment of providing competitive compensation, a full suite of healthcare benefits and flexible work arrangements, but also differentiate through our values that are simple, straightforward, human, and approachable to ensure that they are inclusive and promote collaboration for every associate across roles and locations.

As a global company with associates spanning 24 countries, we have built a “One Team” culture using digital collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams, Yammer, and SharePoint. Most of our projects involve cross-functions spanning multiple geographies and are driven by our mantra of “One team, one mission.”

We’re helping associates grow through formal learning and skill development via our companywide learning platform. Within our technology organization, for example, we provide an early career program where new hires are accelerated through application development roles to help fast-track their careers. Across each region, we offer unique programs and opportunities for our associates to engage with each other and our local communities to learn, volunteer, and make a difference. In India, we offer our EXCELerate Program to celebrate talent, help associates build industry connections, and promote associates’ wellbeing.  In addition to regular career and development discussions between associates and managers, we amplify the stories of those associates who have grown their careers, giving them a platform to share their growth journeys. We then measure the effectiveness of these initiatives through employee surveys, focus groups, and interviews.

In a world where the boundaries between work life and personal life are increasingly blurred, we continue to focus on supporting the total well-being of our associates, including their mental, physical, and financial wellness. This includes frequent global sessions on topics related to mental health, offering several free tools for financial health and education, and continuously working to enhance our benefits offerings each year.

We believe that trust is fundamental to creating a winning culture. Open, transparent, and frequent communications from our leadership team, quarterly Q&A sessions and town hall meetings with leaders, pervasive use of our internal social platform for communications, and continuous improvements to our policies and people practices are just some of the ways we foster this.  In addition, we tie our performance management processes to our core values, helping to ensure every associate is embracing the behaviors and principles our company stands for.

Newsweek’s assessment of Conduent as a Most Loved Workplace was based largely on our organization’s respect, appreciation, and care for our associates, and we don’t intend to rest on our laurels. This means expanding on our commitment to diversity and inclusion and supporting our Employee Impact Groups, which help ensure advocacy, community and celebration of groups who for far too long have been underserved in workplaces throughout history. These EIG groups serve as a vehicle for sharing diverse ideas and perspectives around business and social issues.

At Conduent, our commitment to D&I extends into the marketplace as we work with certified diverse suppliers, source and develop diverse talent, and create opportunities and goodwill in the communities where we do business.

We’ll continue honoring our differences, our backgrounds, our experiences, and the journeys of those who came before us - with education and celebration including companywide observances and events in honor of Black History Month, Pride, Women’s History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month to name just a few. And, we’ll continue to have important conversations that allow us to learn, grow, heal, and flourish together.

There’s still so much to learn about how organizations and leaders can better serve associates. But I know this much to be true – leading with inclusion, fun, enthusiasm, and confident humility while fostering a culture of open and honest communication can generate amazing outcomes for companies, associates, and for the clients and communities they serve.
