April is STD Awareness Month

Did you know that April is STD Awareness Month? Probably not. Nearly everyone would prefer not to think about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) – which is precisely why raising awareness of current STD infection rates, challenges and treatments is crucial.

STDs and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) continue to affect the lives of millions of Americans. While syphilis was once on its way to being eliminated, now it’s on the rise. The current infection rate is the highest it’s been in 20 years, with back-to-back increasing rates in America’s most vulnerable population – babies.

If we want to reverse this trend, it’s essential to be aware, even if we’d rather not be. A commitment to better health – for individuals as well as the population as a whole – requires communicating the importance of preventing, testing for, and treating STDs.

What can you do to help?

  • Learn more about STD Awareness Month on the CDC website
  • Spread the word on how STDs can be prevented
  • Be aware of the importance of technology for outbreak management

If you work in a government agency responsible for public health, you’re crucial to STD/STI awareness and prevention. A comprehensive, easy-to-use Disease Surveillance and Outbreak Management System should be part of your strategy. Our Maven system can help you capture usable data on the rise and fall of STDs, informing treatments and prevention methods in your community.

As we do our part to spread the word on the prevention of STDs, join us in highlighting the impacts of STDs, promoting the importance of technology for outbreak management, and participating in events and activities to raise awareness of STDs – in April and beyond.
