April is STD Awareness Month

Did you know that April is STD Awareness Month? Probably not. Nearly everyone would prefer not to think about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) – which is precisely why raising awareness of current STD infection rates, challenges and treatments is crucial.

STDs and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) continue to affect the lives of millions of Americans. While syphilis was once on its way to being eliminated, now it’s on the rise. The current infection rate is the highest it’s been in 20 years, with back-to-back increasing rates in America’s most vulnerable population – babies.

If we want to reverse this trend, it’s essential to be aware, even if we’d rather not be. A commitment to better health – for individuals as well as the population as a whole – requires communicating the importance of preventing, testing for, and treating STDs.
