MaaS Matters: Shaping the Future of Mobility Services

*This is the third and final post in our MaaS Matters series. To read about municipal advantages in part 1, click here. To learn about traveler advantages, read part 2 here.

Due to the pandemic, many people living in cities may have barely used their cars for months, especially as many are now working from home.

While hard evidence is hard to come by on COVID-19’s impact on the evolving transportation landscape, some people may decide to shed the cost of car ownership entirely, especially in areas across Europe and Asia with easy transit accessibility and high parking costs.

Separately, it’s important to understand that city dwellers expect more from transportation services. They want real-time insights on all available transportation modes, with reliable information and a high level of service. By aggregating approximately 20 mobility operators, the Hauts-de-France region has improved travel across the region and increased the use of public transportation. Travelers there enjoy the convenience of an app to plan routes and gain real-time insights during their journeys. They will soon gain the ability to buy tickets via the app, as well.

While it’s difficult to make long-term predictions based on a few emerging pandemic trends, it’s clear that municipal leaders are starting to see environmental and economic advantages to embracing Mobility as a Service (MaaS). In China, for example, bicycling is booming as people avoid public transit due to COVID-19 exposure risks. And Naples just launched its first electronic scooter (e-scooter) sharing service, joining several other cities across Europe in embracing evolving smart mobility innovations.

As the backbone of sustainable mobility, public transit agencies possess ready-made audiences of travelers and commuters who move through their cities every day. City leaders are also the least biased, most independent transit operators – this is why it makes sense for municipalities to combine various transportation modes into MaaS offerings. The challenge for municipal leaders today is to find a way to integrate transport modes across an array of public and private sector operators and services.
