Medicaid States Can Test New Waters Through Waivers

The Medicaid landscape is as complex as ever. New guidance encourages states to take advantage of waivers to experiment with new approaches and gain flexibility in how they operate their Medicaid programs, beyond what is available under current law.

The latest issue of Standards Perspectives features the article “Innovation Waivers Allow States to Pursue Their Own Health Reform,” which takes a close look at 1332 State Innovation Waivers and Section 1115 Medicaid Demonstration Waivers.

Waivers can be used to expand a state program’s coverage, change delivery systems and modify provider payments, among many other reasons.
